Adding Color to Your Home in Unexpected Ways

It can be tough coming home to a house at the end of the day that you no longer feel is special. It may be familiar or comfortable, but if you do not walk in a feel peaceful and happy, it will drain you over time and you may end up wanting to move whether you can afford a new home or not. It can be a challenge remembering what it was about your home that made you want to buy it in the first place and because tastes change, those same qualities may not even appeal to you any more.

A new and fresh color is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to change a space that once again lives up to your expectation. People usually think of painting as the only way to add color to a space, but this is not the case. There are plenty of ways to brighten a space, and if you are renting and not allowed to paint, many of these will work for you too. Fabrics and materials give you a chance to make a big color impact without spending a lot or making permanent changes. If you have something in a room that needs covering, consider a brightly colored piece of fabric like a grand piano cover. Grand piano covers take a major aspect of the room, protect it, and add a lot of color to the space.

Another option is to swap out your faded old curtains for newer, stylish ones. Curtains come in all varieties of color and pattern, and they are a great way to bring color to the walls without having to repaint the entire space. High quality curtains can also provide other benefits like protection from the sun's harmful rays so your carpet and furniture do not fade, and so your skin is protected when you are indoors.

A variety of accessories can really punch up the color in the room and they give you a chance to take big color risks without committing to more permanent changes like wall color. If you love the look of bright, bold colors, but you think an orange sofa or red walls may be a bit too much, you can add these colors in pops with accessories. A red vase or electric blue painting may be just the thing to liven up a space.

Specific accessories like pillows are a great way to add new colors, patterns, and textures to a space. Not only can you change the feel of the room with the new color, you can change its feel with a fabric. If you want to make a space more comfortable, consider fabrics like corduroy, microfiber, or faux fur. If you want to create an elegant space, choose pillow fabrics like silk and satin.

Finally, consider how the lighting in a room will affect the feeling of the space. Your colors are going to change based on the lighting, so take it into account regardless of the colors and fabrics you choose. A bright, cheery orange may look rust-colored and dingy in a darker room. Blues and greens are going to reflect the light in unexpected ways and a subdued color may be striking once it is in a well-lit area.
