One cannot seem to venture on the Internet these days without hearing excited talk about using AdSense, an advertising program by Google, to make money on their website. AdSense has definitely proved to be a great tool for many webmasters and bloggers, and countless stories exist of people designing websites that earn them some serious dough.

However, people aspiring to achieve financial independence through AdSense often miss the fact that earning a five to seven figure income online will not, I repeat, will not happen overnight. Anyone that is interested in trying out AdSense on their website or that has recently started needs to understand the amount of work involved in succeeding with this program.

My guess is that about 50 to 75 percent of the people reading this article will never see their income rise above a few dollars per day, even after months of work; many of these people will probably give up in result. Many in the remaining 25 percent will probably see their income go above give or ten dollars per day, but will always wonder why they don't earn more. In the end, probably less than one percent will eventually generate a 5-plus figure income from AdSense, while everyone else sits and wonders why they cannot manage to earn more.

Why do I say this?

This is predictable because most people going into AdSense expect that making money will be simple and that it can be done overnight. In reality though, it simply can't. The websites that people often hit in their search for "making money with AdSense" are pages where someone is marketing a product or guide on how to use the program. The owners of these websites are some of the few that have had major success with the program; they often claim that their $19.99 guide to success is "so easy a 6th grader could do it", and that it will "make you thousands within weeks" without consuming much of your time at all.

Unfortunately friends, this is merely a marketing ploy to persuade you to buy their product and make them even richer. The problem here is that when people read this, they are often convinced that they can easily succeed with AdSense on their own, only to soon give up when they realize that it's harder than it looks. If their claims were true, we would all be driving Ferraris right now.

In reality, making a successful website that earns substantial income takes time, and even the people claiming it is easy probably spent grueling hours at the computer before succeeding. The key to earning money with a website is more than just following a step-by-step guide or using a program to generate thousands of websites with advertisements. Yes, these advertisements will earn money, but the key to earning a substantial amount of money is having a large flow of traffic on your website; the key to getting these large amounts of visitors does not lie in a step-by-step guide lasting an hour, but hard work that will last for hours, days, months, perhaps even years for some, depending on how high you have set your goals.

Generating traffic on your website first involves writing and continuously updating content that people will be interested in reading. It involves writing articles and submitting them to tens, even hundreds, of directories that will link back to your website (this further increases your page rank on Google and generates more visitors). It involves marketing and exposing your website across the web to gain even more visitors.

Finally, it involves optimizing your page to result in more visitors and more clicks on advertisements that generate you money. Yeah, doesn't sound like something a 6th grader would do, does it? Completing these tasks is essential to running a well-known website that generates a decent income, and doing them takes time. Writing this article alone took me at least a half-hour, and I write countless articles for various blogs. That does not include the time it will take me to publish this article to various directories, or the time I will spend optimizing my websites and publicizing them.

So yes, running a website that successfully utilizes AdSense is certainly possible, if you are willing to commit to it. If you are prepared to commit a considerable amount of time to fine-tuning your website and publicizing it, you will eventually see a decent income generated by your advertisements. For now, I guess we can only look forward to the day that we can earn enough overnight to buy a Lamborghini.
