Ad Placement For Your Website

The single most important thing about putting ads on your website is where and how you place them. The exact same ads will have completely different results when placed differently and sometimes the difference can be significant.

On the one hand, you want people to click on your ads and make them easy to find. You can have so many ads on your page that you may overpower your content which will turn off visitors. Or you may not have enough ads on your page to maximize your click-through rate (CTR). Where you place traditional ads and text ads also matter.

Generally, you want to lay out traditional ads down the sides and banner ads along the top and bottom in order to frame your content. But you need to size the ads so that they don't force the visitors' eyes away from your content. Remember that the ads are secondary to your content. In-text ads are a newer form of advertising that work like links in your content and are usually double-underlined in order to be distinguished from regular links. However, you can play around with their appearance in order to make them fit your page better, both visually and physically. These are a great way to optimize the ad mix while retaining the flexibility of including or excluding them easily after you do your testing.

Actually, the biggest ad company online, Google, tells you where to best place your ads. All you need to do is search for "Google heat map" and this will bring you a well-researched ad placement diagram that is easy to use.
