Acne Causes and Cures

Expert Author Jack Pelling

Whether your outbreak of acne is acute or chronic, it is important to know the causes to help you find the cures. Normally, we think of juvenile acne, but acne in older people can also occur. Anyone of any age can fall victim to a case of acne, acne vulgaris, or rosacea. The latter can be a particular problem for people in their late 50's and into their 60's, in these cases you should visit your Doctor who will prescribe a cream and in more serious cases a medication.

Determining reasons for acne, as well as cures, can't be done soon enough. First, evaluate your lifestyle to pinpoint possible causes. Look at the foods you consume. If you moderate your food intake, it may be harder to identify which make the condition worse. But if you have acquired a taste for foods made with trans-fats, such as anything made with cottonseed oil, commercial taco shells, glazed donuts, margarine, potato chips, or anything made with shortening, you are most likely aggravating your condition.

Surprisingly, some foods rich in iodine, including shrimp, oysters, lobster, crab, and sea vegetables, can cause some to break out or interfere with acne treatment. If you are one of those whose acne is made worse when eating these foods, also steer clear of spinach. Fried and fatty foods, and foods rich in Omega 6 fatty acids, may also aggravate acne, acne vulgaris, and rosacea, as may foods that quickly turn carbohydrates into sugars, such as bagels, pancakes, cookies and more.

Take time to evaluate what you are eating, and when your breakouts get worse. Keeping a diary is helpful. As you are evaluating your habits, make sure you include the following in the effort to clear up your skin:

  • Be gentle with your skin. Try not to squeeze or rub pimples.
  • Avoid touching your face with your hands or fingers
  • Take off makeup at night, and use water-based products
  • Shampoo your hair daily, and try to keep it off of your face.
  • Avoid wearing headbands or hats..

Some natural products have been suggested as treatments for acne, such as: 5% Tea tree oil, Zinc supplements, and Glycolic acid. If none of these work for you, it may be time for a doctor's visit. They may prescribe antibiotics, a cream or gel. Follow instructions to the letter, and let your doctor know when or if your symptoms worsen or other symptoms arise.

What you want to do is catch this early, so that you can figure out what works for you, manage the condition, and avoid scarring.
