The first thing to cover is "What is Acid Reflux?" Acid reflux is when the contents of the stomach are pushed back up into the esophagus. Your stomach has acid and enzymes, which can damage the lining of the esophagus, and cause the symptoms of heartburn.
What causes Acid Reflux? There is small muscle between the esophagus and the stomach that acts as a barrier between the two. Normally the muscles relaxes and allows the entry of food into the stomach as you swallow. Once the food travels into your stomach, the muscle contracts and closes off the entrance. Well, you don't have to be a genius or doctor to figure out what happens with acid reflux. The muscles relaxes and allows the food in the stomach to go backward up into the esophagus.
Here are a few acid reflux symptoms...
- A burning sensation in your throat or chest
- Bitter or sour taste in your mouth
- Coughing
- Wheezing or sudden lost of breath
I just listed some of the basic symptoms now let's talk about something you can do right away that can help.
Tip 1. Raising the head of the bed is an effective acid reflux treatment. It is useful for nocturnal acid reflux symptoms and reduces sensitisation that results in problems during the day.
I found also that by raising my head to a level higher than my body while trying to go to sleep. Like I was sleeping at a 30 degree angle. I was able to get a little sleep during the night. It doesn't sound real comfortable but at that point I would have done anything just to get some sleep.
Tip 2. Lose weight.
Losing weight can actually help reduce or cure a lot of issues one may have. My Doctor was speaking with me about losing weight a few months ago. Not for acid reflux but for high blood pressure. Well, this is what happened. As I lose weight the acid reflux was becoming less and less, just as a side benefit.
Tip 3. Pay close attention to your diet. fatty foods, spicy foods, onions, tomatoes, chocolate, caffeine-containing beverages, alcohol and carbonated beverages frequently cause acid reflux. This sounds like almost everything I eat.
Pay close attention to the things that cause you to have indigestion and eliminating them from your diet could do the job. Make a list of all those foods and carry it with you if necessary. The list will serve as a reminder. I am not one for taking too many pills, in fact I do not like the ideal of taking anything that may have potential side effects. With that being said, I'm usually looking for a natural way of curing or treating any illness.
With that being said, the use of antacids or over-the-counter medicines for heartburn and acid indigestion can help for temporary relief. An ideal I had was to find out what the medicines was made of and try to find something natural to take for it instead. Usually I was able to get some vegetable of fruit to substitute for it. Eating smaller meals and don't lie down for at least 45 minutes after eating. This will probably vary with the person and what you eat. It's always a good ideal to pay attention to your diet anyhow.
After all, you are what you eat.
For me I notice fasting a few times per year has had great health benefits. But the most important thing is that you must control what you put in your body and if you chose correctly the benefits will follow.
