Shopping for an above ground swimming pool is not as simple as it used to be because there are so many different types to choose from. There are various materials used to build each and even choosing a liner or fence can be overwhelming.

Soft or Hard Sided

First, you need to decide whether you want a hard sided or soft sided above ground swimming pool. Hard sided pools usually have metal frames for more support and they tend to cost less but take longer to build.

Soft sided pools are available in more shapes and sizes and can be assembled easier. Although they're soft, the resin used to create them makes them more durable than what you would expect. They're also easier to assemble compared to hard sided pools since they don't require the steel frame.

Just because something is easy to assemble does not necessarily mean you should install it yourself. There are people who specialize in installing pools and if you want it done properly, you should obtain a licensed professional.

Pool Covers

Choosing a cover for your above ground swimming pool is another purchase that you will want to consider carefully. Sometimes you will need two covers depending on what type of climate you live in.

For winter, you need a specially made cover that is meant for protecting your pool from ice and snow damage. In the summer, a lighter cover can be used but you will still want something to help keep the heat in and the dirt out. Depending on the strength of the cover, they can also protect against people or animals from falling into the pool. To qualify to be called a safety pool cover they need to be able to hold a fair amount of weight. Any cover for your above ground swimming pool needs to be strapped on securely to work effectively.

Pool Fencing and Decks

You will require a fence on your above ground swimming pool for safety reasons. Which one you choose depends on your individual needs and preferences. You can find fences and decks in various colors and styles and some are more private than others are.

With decks, the benefits are that they're more private and give you somewhere to lounge. You also don't have to worry about having to climb a ladder to get in. Wooden decks are the most traditional and popular types. They also make the yard appear more attractive because otherwise you just have a big pool floating there that can sometimes look out of place.

If you want a low maintenance deck, consider vinyl. Some of the designs are still attractive and you do not have to worry about staining and sealing on an ongoing basis. Cleaning vinyl fences or decks is a lot easier as well.

Alternately, a simple small fence usually comes along with an above ground swimming pool kit so you don't necessarily have to buy or build a deck if you don't want to. Either way, both will need to be secure in order to keep others out when you can't attend the pool.
