Bollywood is the Mumbai based film industry in India. It is one of the largest film Industries of the world, producing more than 1000 films a year and employing millions of people. Bollywood is commonly referred to as Hindi cinema, although the films use the languages of Hindi, Urdu and English. It employs people from all over India.

Raja Harishchandra (1913) made by Dadasaheb Phalke, was the first silent feature film in India. Alam Ara (1931) made by Ardeshir Irani was the first Indian sound movie. It was a super hit in those times.

In the early ears of Bollywood, the movies were made on low budget. However, Bollywood films are now multi-million dollar productions. The actors and directors earn millions of dollars for a single film. In recent years the action and science-fiction films involve high quality action and special effects for which the overseas experts are employed.

Music and songs are very important for the success of a Bollywood film. To give full value for their money, the Hindi movie contains all the ingredients of a masala film like songs, dances, love triangles, comedy, fight scenes, etc. The story involves family ties, love triangles, sacrifice, corrupt politicians, kidnappers, court scenes, etc. The films also contain a good dose of sex and kissing scenes. Some art films are also made that contain sophisticated stories.

About 2 decades ago, the Bollywood movies were shot in different parts of India such as Kashmir, Shimla, Dehradun, Jaipur, Jaisalmer, etc. But the viewers want to see new locations. The movies shot in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and European countries have proved a real box office draw.
