Tom Delonge, Blink 182's vocalist-slash-guitarist, is definitely a name that goes down in American punk rock history for obvious reasons.
Blink 182 is a highly successful pop punk band founded in 1992 and has now made a comeback in the music scene after a four-year break. Being one of the vocalists of the band, Tom Delonge has certainly established a name for himself.
Delonge was born in 1975 and was raised in Poway, California, where he also founded the band that would be later known as Blink 182. According to him, his early music influences include Screeching Weasel, Descendants, and The Cure.
However, playing in a band and being a musician was not his childhood dream. In fact, he originally wanted to be a fire-fighter.
It was during high school that Mark Hoppus and Scott Raynor met Tom Delonge. Blink was formed then, but its name was later changed into Blink 182 to avoid legal disputes with an Irish band of the same name.
Also, Raynor was later replaced by current band member Travis Barker due to some drinking issues.
Through the years, Blink 182 has released five albums, namely "Cheshire Cat," "Dude Ranch," "Enema of the State," "Take off Your Pants and Jacket," and "Blink-182." A sixth album is underway.
The band has produced several hit singles from their albums, such as "All the Small Things," "Feeling This," "Down," "First Date," and "Man Overboard," among others.
According to sources, the main reason behind the band's indefinite hiatus in 2005 was because of Delonge's decision to leave the band. During that time, there had been communication difficulties and tension arising among the band members, most especially between Mark Hoppus and Tom Delonge. Blink 182 then decided to take a break for a while.
The reunion of Blink 182 members was announced in the 51st Grammy Awards, where the three of them reappeared on stage for the first time after the four-year break.
In an interview with Delonge, he said that he and his band members have this unspoken bond among them, and what pulled them back together was the accident that happened with fellow band mate Travis Barker. The drummer was involved in a plane crash, but was thankfully able to survive.
Aside from Blink 182, Tom Delonge is also the lead vocalist for this other band, Angels and Airwaves. His other ventures include directing a music video for band Taking Back Sunday, running Macbeth Footwear and Atticus Clothing (though he sold his share in the latter), and making cameo appearances in several shows and documentaries.
