ADHD Behavior Modification - A Few Simple Suggestions Combined With A Dash of Common Sense

Expert Author Robert D Hawkins

Think back for a moment to when you were a child. What were some of the things that motivated you to do well and what were those things that made you rebel to a point where you didn't care what punishment was in store? Probably some of those old reflections made you smile while others may have made you a little bit sad. Nevertheless, there is at least a 50 percent chance that some of the same things that motivated you will motivate your children.

Why? The simple truth is that over half of ADHD children have at least one parent that has, or has had ADHD. In other words your child could be a mini you!

Therefore, you should take the standard guidelines offered in this article on ADHD behavior modification and mix them with some seasoning, made up of your personal feelings and sensation and serve them as a large serving of ADHD behavior modification that may not taste so good to your child but will pay dividends, and just as importantly leaving you feeling satisfied as a parent. Okay, now if you have a few minutes to spare why don't we run through some ADHD behavior modification steps to get you cooking.

*Be your child's number one cheerleader: Constantly praise them when they do something good, or even when they almost do something good. For example let's say they were supposed to finish their homework but didn't quite make it through due to some unexpected distraction. You might tell they have done great so far but we should go ahead and finish this assignment so we don't have to worry with it ever again. If they need a little help restarting work with them until they can get going. You might even tempt them with a reward such as staying up a little later or playing a session or two of their favorite video game.

*Establish a clear set of consequences: Did knowing that a trip to the principal's office could be in store make you take pause when you were thinking about misbehaving in class? I know for me that was the case and probably it was for you as well. That is one example of how a clear punishment system can motivate acceptable behavior. It wasn't the actual trip that made us behave better it was the fear of the trip, and of course what our parents would say about it all.

*Structure is important for ADHD children: ADHD children desperately need structure. As a parent you will need to inject structure, predictability, and routine into their lives. Remember attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, when you boil it down, is a problem with self regulation. By providing structure you will be providing them with boundaries, taking away most of the challenges of self regulating and freeing their minds up to focus more effectively.

*Be consistent when dishing out the discipline: Nothing is harder than to discipline your child, especially if you have a smart child who knows exactly how to make you feel guilty. The best way to become a consistent parent and ultimately be successful with your ADHD modification plan is to establish a few basic rules/expectations before hand, cover them with all members of the family, and stick to your guns when they lay that academy award winning guilt trip on you.

In summary, a successful ADHD behavior modification plan is about approaching this challenge with a positive attitude, infusing your personal experiences into your ADHD behavior modification plan, being your child's number one cheerleader, recognizing they may need a little more personal attention than the average child and accepting that fact, picking a doable reward and punishment plan suitable for their age, and being consistent.

Additionally, occasionally a situation might arise where as a parent you may feel like you need a little extra help. In these instances a few session with a behavioral therapist or a natural homeopathic ADHD supplement could be a couple of options worth considering.
