There are many different types of herbs out there. For instance you have annuals, perennials, and biennials, just like any other type of plant in a garden. One thing you may not have realized however is that every single type of herb out there is different, and there are a LOT of them. They all have different needs as well, which means you will need to do quite a bit of research, and find out which herbs need what type of care.
Annual herbs, such as basil, or even cilantro are not very hardy, and if exposed to very cold weather they will probably die. Every year they will need to be replanted. Perennials can survive this however, and each year they will make a great comeback. Biennial herbs need to be sown in the late spring,and they should be done so right in the garden rather than being transplanted from elsewhere. Make sure you plant the seeds in shallow rows because they will not take root very deeply. If you want to, then you can put the finer seeds in a mix of sand and soil, as this will give them the chance to spread out evenly.
There are a few different herb categories, and typically they are named for their particular use. For gardeners, culinary herbs are the best and most useful because of the applications they have in the kitchen. They can be used to flavor different types of food, or they can be used as a garnish. Aromatic herbs are used for aroma, as would be expected. Some of these are for toilet water, some can be used for perfume. These can even be used to scent linen and clothing. Herbs have also been used for healing and medical applications. But then again, not all herbs will save a life. In fact there are some that can be very dangerous if eaten or applied to the skin. This is why you need to know all of your herbs before you actually attempt to use them.
There are some herbs that are not used for any of the above application. In fact, some are used for decorative purposes. There are many different herbs, and some of them are just plain beautiful. Valerian is one of those herbs, and it has crimson blossoms like no other herb.
Though there are many different types of herbs in their own categories, there are a lot of herbs that can be used for several purposes. Let's talk about mint in that regard. It can actually be used in cooking, but it can also be used as a pest repellant. It is very important that you actually understand the properties and different uses of each and every herb. By knowing this information,you will find that the herbs can be used for so many different applications.
