If you don't save the file in My Documents or any other designated folder, the document will remain in the temporary directory.

Other users will casually save stuff on their desktop or in the drive C root directory without giving it further thought. Files received from instant messaging services usually end up in completely different directories. The point of all this is, if you don't pay attention to where you save your files, you could end up with a situation in which you easily fill up your hard disk with a lot of data that either you don't need or you may not know how to find again.

The Windows operating system has a thing for temporary files. The problem is, when computers crash or files are improperly saved, temporary files like to stay around and clutter up your computer. For example, you cancelled the installation of a program. Temporary files from the unpacking of the installation components are left behind. The result is that you find hundreds, if not thousands, of files stuck in obscure places, with obscure file names, throughout your hard drive. To make matters worse, some of these files can't even be located unless you really understand how to find them. Getting these files off your hard drive is not always easy.

Of course, there are automated utilities that locate and delete your temporary files, but they don't typically clean out all of the files. In some cases, you have to hire a technician to get rid of all the temporary files you don't need in your hard drive. Thus, it helps to know where they hide and how they get there in the first place.
