Have you ever heard the phrase "anchor text" and wondered what it is? Well, put simply it is the words that you see on the webpage for a link. If you have ever seen "Click here" and it is in blue and/or underlined, then you have seen it being used. Google and other search engines put value on anchor text in their algorithm (a mathematical rule used to rate websites) because keywords in the anchor text are regularly used as a way to indicate the content of the site being linked to. So for instance if I was to link to Google's homepage by using html coding I could make it appear as Google Home Page or even Search Engine Homepage .
Anchor text is very easily created in wordpress just by highlighting the text and then pressing the "link"button in the administrative area and inputting the required url. An important reminder when linking to a site is to use the keywords relevant for that site (such as I did above for Google) because you not only increase the ease of use for your readers by allowing them to know what to expect from the linked-to site but you also increase the amount of link-love (the power of your link to their site). If you are generous in this way to others then they are more likely to show the same generosity back.
For search engine optimization reasons, make sure also to think carefully about keywords when linking to other pages on your site so you can also gain from the power of anchor text. If you refer to a previous article or blog post then consider what keywords work best for you to gain higher search engine rankings- do not use the ubiquitous "click here".
