Style is the essence of art. It embodies the idea that creativity can be evoked in a very subtle way through personality. It is part of the ideal that each of us is unique, and by expressing that, we are able to express who we are as individuals.
This idea becomes broadened when we look at stylistic trends. People evoke ideas of art, movements of beauty that are then adopted by others. In the ever changing and evolving nature of the style and art world, everyone builds on the ideas of others, and the nature of style progresses.
However there is a tendency to rely on the ideas of others, rather than to evoke our own personalities upon the world. This is often due to judging, and fear of judging by others. Once the herd has accepted something as good, or more dangerously, something as bad, the tendency is for everyone to shy towards or away from that thing, regardless of the personal leanings of the individual.
This can lead to some positive benefits. In general the flow of art and beauty will be consistent, allowing each person to impress the whole by straining and stretching accepted conventions further with each new creation.
However this often eliminates the ability of those who can truly go further. The people who can see outside of herd mentality, and can make decisions based on what is better, what is intrinsically good, or what people will be seeing and feeling months and years ion the future. It can eliminate the ability of individuals to predict, or to innovate. It is a restrictive element in our society.
It is important to balance yourself in all stylistic pursuits. If you follow the pack to closely, you'll never be able to see anything beyond the herd. However if you stray too far, the herd wont be able to recognize you.
