When you use a propane tankless water heater, you will be heating water in a different and more efficient way than you would with a traditional heater. Traditional heaters work by holding water in a storage tank, and keeping it hot by using a heating element. The heating element is turned off and on many times during the day, in an effort to keep the entire holding tank hot. Even if you do not use the hot water, it will eventually cool and will need to be reheated. This can be an extremely wasteful way of heating, because you are paying to heat water that in all likelihood, you will not even use.
A propane tankless water heater is much more efficient, because you only heat the water on demand when you need it, instead of storing and heating the entire tank. When you turn on the hot water tap, the water is heated by the propane tankless heater, and is then delivered to the faucet. This process can take anywhere from five to twenty seconds, but it's really not much different than the amount of time it would take to make the trip from the hot water tank to the faucet when using a tradition tank heater.
You can save a significant amount of energy and money by using a propane tankless water heater. You could save thirty percent or more by using this type of heater, just due to the energy savings. Because you are not paying for hot water when you do not need it, and the fact that the unit turns off automatically when not in use, you have significantly minimized your heating expenses, limiting it to only the times when you are actually using hot water.
Floor space can also be saved by using a propane tankless water heater. Because a tankless water heater takes up less space and can even be installed on the wall, it saves the floor space that would be used by a large tank hot water heater.
Propane tankless hot water heaters cost more than traditional tank heaters, but the cost savings over time due to the energy savings will eventually make up the difference and then some. This style is quite durable, low maintenance, and is designed to last for twenty years or more.
If your family uses an exceptionally large amount of hot water, especially when multiple people use hot water at the same time, there is a chance that a propane tankless water heater will not be able to keep up with the high demand. This sort of situation can occur when, for example, one family member is taking a hot shower while another is using the washing machine. You can solve this problem by planning your water consumption a little more carefully, or by dedicating an individual heater to certain appliances, such as a spa tub or luxury shower.
