A Positive Attitude is Contagious

Expert Author Robert Britt

Have you ever gone to a sporting event and suddenly found yourself in the middle of a "wave"? It's really tough not to join in. It's fun and it really doesn't cost you anything and you become part of a movement - literally. It's the same thing when you are around a group of people who are either "up" or "down" emotionally. That really is the heart of this article. Attitude is infectious, and if you want a positive attitude look for people who exude that quality.

This is also the basis of many civic oriented groups. You get amongst a bunch of like minded individuals who share a common goal and you all support each other. This common goal could be something like public speaking (Toastmasters) or it could be children's burn care (Shriners). It is people united for a cause and being a part of something like that is uplifting to say the least.

But the point I am trying to make is that attitude is contagious. So who are you hanging around with? Seriously. Take an inventory of your friends, acquaintances and co-workers and see where they are getting you. Do you need to pare down the groups and weed out the people who are bringing you down? Are there people who call you up and you have a visit with them and you come home exhausted because they are just dumping all their negativity on you?

I think it's a noble thing to visit and lift someone out of a funk that they are in, but if it is totally a one way street there could be a need to re-assess the friendship.

On the other hand, what groups do you belong to that really get your blood pumping? For me it is my improv troupe and most of my theater friends. I go to a rehearsal or an event and the aura of the group is nearly visible! I have other groups of friends who get together over a glass of wine or a good book and discuss the possibilities of life.

The point to all of it is that it is upbeat and you take that away with you when you leave. Everyone there takes it home with them. It's a situation where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts and all the parts leave being greater than they were when they arrived. It's the greatest of win-win situations and it's all about attitude.
