A Parents Survival Guide For Homework Time

Always keep this in mind, it is not your homework, it is the child's homework! You lived through your childhood and somehow your homework got done or you faced the consequences of it not being turned in on time. Your child needs to do the same from the very beginning. Now that you know it is not your homework that needs to be completed, move forward and make things easier on you.

When a child gets home from school, ask them if they have a little homework or a lot of homework. This way you can better plan for how much time they will need to complete it. Now, let them enjoy actually being home from school. Allow them to have a snack, tell you about their day, unwind and shake the day right off. They have been sitting all day long and they have probably had enough. If you pick this time to begin homework, it most probably won't end well. On Fridays, a great idea is to not even open the backpacks till Saturday. You need a mental break from it all.

After dinner (unless you eat dinner late at 8pm) is a great time for homework. Allow about an hour to complete it as a good average. It may actually on some days take longer and on others it may take much less. Have a designated area where the child will do his homework and announce that it is homework time. Let them gather the backpack and get out there work. Also, allow them to sort through it and organize it. After all, they put it in their backpacks and it was assigned to them, not you. Gently approach them and not like a bitter person that hates homework time or they will now hate homework time too. Homework is not a big deal unless you make it one. Suppose now that getting through homework is a piece of cake. Now progress along with that thought. It is not a burden designed to drive you crazy. It's just homework and it's not even yours!

Help the child when they need it and back away when they don't. Keep in mind that most likely no one sat right next to this child all day cheering them on to please, please do your work. They simply did it or else! Same way at home. You are not taking on a part-time, evening teaching position here and do not turn into one either, as you will be drained if you do. Soon they will hardly pay attention in school because they know mom or dad will carry them through the lesson that night at home so don't do it.

Supportively check on them, answer quick questions and maybe help guide them by showing them how to prioritize their assignments and that's it. Remember it is their homework and not yours. Once they have completed it, make a fuss, because of course, you are proud of them and have them immediately pack it into their backpacks so that neither of you have to look at it again. Now, the best part go on with your evening and enjoy your family. Homework is done!
