A Few Simple Exercise Tips

Getting and staying motivated to exercise, especially in the beginning, of a program seems to be one of the hardest things for us to do. We can always find reasons not to take the time and effort to exercise, whether it's being too tired, not having time or a dozen other reasons. What we need to do is find a reason to exercise.

One good way to motivate your self is to use music. Download your favorite tunes on your ipod and use your exercise time to enjoy the music you love. When I was training for a marathon, I down loaded all the songs that dealt with "running", Jackson Brown's "Running on Empty", Bob Seager's "Against the Wind" etc... Like Forest Gump, I ran and ran. I actually found that I looked forward to the music and that actually made the running fun. If you watch the Olympics and many other sporting events, several of the athletes listen to music prior to their performances to "get hyped" for the contest.

It's also important to find an exercise activity that fits you and that you enjoy doing. Remember, except for some sports like running, you get in shape to do the activity while the activity keeps you in shape. If you like to play tennis, the better shape you are in to play, the better you will feel when and after you play. I was once shooting in a National Archery Competition. Now even I will admit that archery is not exactly your major aerobic exercise, but it is muscular. I put together an entire exercise routine to develop my arm and back muscles as well as cardio endurance centered on having the physical and mental stamina to make it through the tournament. This exercise routine really kept me focused on my shooting through my training. The bonus came when I got to the tournament. Not only was I mentally prepared, I was physically prepared.

Once you have found the exercise for you, you need to do it correctly and without cheating since the only one you will be cheating is yourself. Doing an exercise correctly gives you the most benefit form that activity and the results will keep you going. Even if you are tired and may have to decrease the intensity or number of repetitions, you will feel better if the time you spend gives you some benefit.

Last, but not least, to stay motivated, cut yourself some slack and take a day off now and then. Some people find their exercise routine gives them the mental break they need. If they are really tired or it has been a hard week at work, while others just need to stop everything, some need the exercise to keep going. So listen to your body and take a day off from everything if that's what you need. Sleep in, have a leisurely breakfast and enjoy the rest. This is sometimes the best motivation to keep you exercising, as long as you don't make it a habit.
