A Checklist When Choosing a Home

Expert Author Gerb Juarez

What are your preferences in choosing a home that is right for you and your family? Before you apply for a mortgage and choose a property to buy, you have to think first if you will be happy living in the home you have chosen for the coming years. In searching for a property to purchase, a checklist is important so you can smartly pick a good one.

Building type and materials used in the home construction. First you have to know how old is the structure because the older the house you purchased the more maintenance it requires. You should also check the building type and materials used in the home construction.

Kitchen. How do you want your kitchen to look like or how large your kitchen should be? Do you prefer to cook in a gas or in an electric stove?

The living area. Do you prefer a formal living area and a den? You should include this in your checklist as well. Are there enough windows for your plants if you happened to be a plant-lover? Also, check the carpet in the living area if it is still in good condition or needs some replacement because that would mean another additional expenses for you later on.

Bedrooms. This is one of the most private rooms in your home since this is a place for you to unwind. You should check on this if you planned to have more children in the future or rooms just enough to accommodate if you have guests in the house.

Bathrooms. If you have large family then the house you are going to choose should have several bathrooms in it enough for everyone.

Roofing. Take a look at the condition and materials and see if it needs some repair soon or not.

Storage. This includes closets, garages and laundry. Make sure that there is plenty of closet space for your family's clothing. For the garage, you can opt for a two-car garage but recently, a three-car garage was preferred by many. The laundry facilities should be situated somewhere on the main floor of the house.

It is easy to fall in love with a home and become blind to all the little things attached into it without thinking that these little things can cost you a lot of money. When you walk through and look at a home, make sure to scrutinize it carefully.
