A Brief History of DSG International Plc

DSG international plc (Dixons Store Group) is one of the largest consumer electronics retailers in Europe. The company operates as Dixons, Dixons Travel, Currys, Currys.digital, PC World and Electro World stores as well as: Pixmania, and Advent Computers.

Dixons specialize in high technology consumer electricals and electronics including audio-video equipment, home computers, small and large domestic appliances, photographic equipment and software for PC and gaming. They also provide financial and after sales services like extended service agreements and credit services for the larger purchases. Dixons also offer other products and services spares, repairs, digital online photo processing and pre-recorded media.

Dixons' main competitors are Best Buy Europe and Kesa Electricals plc, which owns Comet and Kitchen Science.

Early Dixons History

Dixons was founded in 1937 by Charles Kalms and Michael Mindel in Southend originally called Dixons Studios Limited. The name Dixons was selected randomly from the telephone directory and was sufficiently short to fit the small shop front.

By the 1950's Dixons started selling cameras and in 1957 a new head office and buying centre was opened in Edgware employing staff to deal with 60,000 mail order customers.

In 1962 Dixons changed its name at that time to Dixons Photographic Limited, and within two years bought out competitors Ascotts and Bennetts, By 1971 Charles Kalms was succeeded by his son Stanley.

In 1982 Dixons introduced its well known brand own Saisho a range of electronic goods including hi-fi and video, in 1984 Dixons bought Currys, a white goods retailer, and Mastercare, a nationwide electrical appliance service provider.

Dixons Today

Today Dixons and Currys are the UK's largest electrical retailers. They also have stores in the Republic of Ireland. The company's main market is white and brown goods, but also sells small appliances, personal computers and mobile phones all at competitive prices with Dixons discount offers and vouchers provided on a regular basis.

In January 2008 DSG made the decision to stop selling analogue TVs and sell only Integrated Digital Televisions, mainly to get consumers ready for the digital switchover.

Currys.digital is the new name for Dixons retail outlets in the UK. Currys.digital focus is as a specialist division of Currys focusing on customers which want cameras, personal computers, audio and video equipment.
