When a hard disk fails, or it is damaged in some way, it can potentially spell disaster for the individual or business that uses it. In this article we'll look at the basics of hard drive recovery, aimed at those who do not have a great deal of experience in the realm of data recovery.

If someone wants to recover a data storage device by themselves they may be in for a shock; it is generally accepted that the basic common or garden end user does not have the correct tool in order to attempt a hard drive recovery. For instance, opening a hard disk in a normal domestic environment would allow dust particles to settle on the drive, thus causing those particles to become stuck between the read/write head and what is known as the platter. This can cause further head crashes and more damage to the platter - making the hard drive recovery process even more problematic. As well as this, end users do not always have the technical expertise required to perform such operations correctly.

There are a multitude of ways that hard drive recovery can take place. Sometimes the data storage system can be repaired by simply replacing certain parts of the hard drive that have been damaged. While this can lead to the hard drive being usable, there can still be logical damage to the hard drive which will require other equipment and software in order to retrieve.

There is a specialised disk imaging procedure than can be utilised to record the parts of the hard disk that can be salvaged. Once this image of the disk drive is safely recorded, it can be analysed - and in many cases a large part of the drive can be reconstructed. There are variety of highly technical procedures used by a variety of companies in order to resurrect hard disk from the dead - and it is very likely that employing any of them will result in the invalidation of the manufacturer's warranty.

There are a wide variety of open source disk imaging systems available which can help in the resurrection of data. However, again, it is not advisable for an untrained individual to go ahead and attempt storage device recovery.

As an alternative, there are a number of hard disk recovery specialists who can help those who need to resurrect data. It might surprise some people just how possible it is to regain data that was once thought lost.

Gino Hitshopi is highly experienced in the realm of hard drive recovery, having worked in the data recovery industry for many years. For more information please visit: http://www.cleardatarecovery.co.uk/
