9 Features of Neo-Eclectic Architecture (Mixed Modern Homes)

The majority of homes in North America during the late 20th and early 21st century have been built using neo-eclectic architecture. Neo-eclectic homes are designed by combining a number of decorative techniques inspired by several different periods and cultures. This style of modern mixed architecture home caters toward the middle upper class as an affordable high-end luxurious home. The design interpretation takes into consideration interior and exterior architectural features, trim details, paint colors, and balance of scale and size. Some of the architecture styles being combined are Arts and Crafts, Colonial, Victorian, Mediterranean and Tudor home styles. 6. Windows. Modern homes being built incorporate the use of an abundance of windows to bring large amounts of natural sunlight into the home. The use of many different types of windows, such as bay windows, garden windows, picture windows and single or double hung windows, with distinct grids or v-grooves (etched) on the panes to provide an added layer of dimension.

7. Floor Plan. Modern mixed homes have very open floor plans that are designed to serve a functional purpose. In recent years, kitchens have become the room that the modern families congregate in, they tend to be larger and open to the living room and/or dining room.

8. Building Materials. The front elevations of homes mix multiple materials to create a unique look. Many of the building materials used during construction are wood, brick, rock, siding, wrought iron, and modern materials such as vinyl, imitation stone and PVC.

9. Other Exterior Features. Neoeclectic homes typically have little or no front porch with covered entryways. The chimneys or gas fireplaces are generally unpronounced.
