8 Principles For Building a Better Business

Expert Author Sheri Bell-Rehwoldt

I recently attended a local chamber-sponsored luncheon, in which the keynote speaker - hurrah! - was even better than the catered three-course meal. Though his role is as the CEO of a local sports franchise, his tips on running a better business most definitely apply to all business owners.

Perhaps you'll find a nugget of gold within his guiding principles:

1. Ethics are everything.
Your reputation is, ultimately, all you have. Screw it up, and you may never recover.

2. Make decisions boldly.
Be a strong guide for your employees. Don't be afraid to choose a direction and move forward. If it turns out to be the wrong direction, simply correct the course as you go along.

3. Don't be afraid to tackle the struggles.
Fear is mostly likely going to be your daily companion. Don't let it take over. Face your struggles, grow through them, and thumb your nose at fear with each accomplishment.

4. Make your product your #1 priority - and charge for it.
1 percent of paid is better than 100 percent of free.

5. Share with others. Be generous with your staff and community.
If you reward those who help you, they will stay the course with you.

6. Be rabid in defense of your past accomplishments.
Stop and pat yourself on the back. You deserve it, no matter the size of the accomplishment. Celebrate each milestone. Don't defer celebration by thinking "I'll celebrate when I achieve X."

7. Enjoy your accomplishments.
Even if they took a lot of struggle, it was forward movement. Celebrate that.

8. Raise the bar by continuing to delight your customers.
Customers are the reason we're in business. So make it a priority to find new ways to engage customers so they'll continue to spend time and money with you.

Get to it so your marketing starts percolating!
