Even though 50 marks what many to consider the just the half way point in a person's life-with the best yet to come--many people with a sense of humor like to celebrate it with an "Over the Hill" party theme. Here are tips how to put together a great "Over the Hill" 50th Birthday Party.

Before putting together an Over the Hill 50th Birthday party you need to be assured the birthday celebrant has a good sense of humor and will be okay with this type of theme. There may be embarrassing moments with decorations, games, food and gag gifts that are very funny but they all play to the person getting old.

Gag gifts

Gag gifts for this type of a theme are a great idea. Think in terms of what people might need in their senior years and anything goes-adult diapers, fake false teeth, wrinkle cream, prune juice, pretend hearing aids....I think you get the idea.

Decorations

An Over the Hill party is not complete without lots of black balloons. You can even buy balloons that have printed on them the saying "over the hill". Be sure to accompany this with other items that are black like the table cloths, streamers, plates, cups, service ware. Gold is often a good color combination that can be matched with black so it looks somewhat like a party and not a funeral. Some funeral music playing in the background will help entering guests feel the tone and be fun.

Games

You can have a lot of fun here if your guest of honor and guests are willing. Races where everyone participates using walkers can be a lot of fun. Another game where guests have to pop balloons with walking canes can be fun.

Food

The cake for an over the hill party will be very thematic if it is shaped in a fashion that will signify how old the birthday celebrant is getting. Some creative cakes have been shaped as tomb stones or coffins. A creative cake design could be in the shape of feet hanging out from a covered body on the feet would be a tag that identifies the birthday guest of honor. Finger food and appetizers can also be served that have names of geriatric situations.

Special Attire of Costumes

It can be fun to invite the guests tom come dressed in attire you might see an older person wearing: pants worn very high, suspenders, mismatching pants and shirt, tacky looking ties or bow ties, grey hair wigs or bald. Encourage your guests to bring along geriatric accessories if they have them, like canes, walkers, "help me I can't get up pendant."

Entertainment

For a party like this often the best entertainment can come from the guests. Ask each guest to think about a funny situation or embarrassing moment that occurred in the life of the birthday celebrant. These should be sent to the party planner in advance. You can have someone read them at a certain time, you can have each guest read their own, you can make up a special recording and play it during the party.
