5 Ways to Keep a Positive Attitude

Expert Author Maria D. Martinez

With such a changing and unpredictable environment, it is definitely hard to keep a good attitude. Especially if you have lost your job, or if your friends are always complaining about their lives, or you are not satisfied with your relationships, your health or with your money. When asked how do I manage to keep a good attitude, here are some of my thoughts and personal recommendations.

First of all, I make a point to appreciate what I have. I think that is key...good health, loving relationships, a job and the ability to help others are just some of the things I know are not to be taken for granted. Secondly, I realize that I have a choice. Everything that comes your way is almost like a test. It will test your ability to react and as it stands there, staring at you in the eye wanting to know, 'Now what?' How are you going to handle me? In my professional opinion, from my own experience and that of people I have been fortunate enough to work with, that single moment dictates the outcome of the whole experience. We can choose to fight, argue, get mad...or we can take a deep breath and analyze the situation...it's pros and cons and what are the possible consequences associated with each. If in fact, it is too much to manage at once, you can still choose to walk away or to delay your response. That is always a safe way to go when things are too hard, or when you know that that was a low punch.

I also recommend my clients (and practice myself) a combination of the following:

• Start and End your day in a receptive mode. Receive the opportunities coming your way, be open to growing and developing each day. Everything that happens bring with itself a lesson, a teaching. What is it? What are you taking away?
• Be intentional. What are your goals today...this week...this month? Have a plan (or plan to fail) and be deliberate on what is going to take to get there. Write and meditate about what steps are necessary and even better, visualize how your life will be enhanced once you reach your goal.
• Surround yourself with positive and energetic people. Exercise your right to kick out of your life (at least for a while) anyone that is negative or influencing you to think negatively. They may not realize it, but it truly takes away from your 'energy bank.' Put all of your efforts and let your energy flow into things that will prosper and build you up.
• One of my favorites: "fake it till you make it" When all else fails, pretend. There is certain magic associated with pretending. Not to say that you will ignore serious issues, but if you 'act as if' things are the way you want them, you will start shifting the energy into producing the results you desire.

So in short, to keep a good attitude take each day, make the choice to be thankful each moment of every day! Once you realize all the good things that you have and you are appreciative of everything that you are able to do, create...live, you will discover one of the greatest attributes in life: a positive attitude. You have the inner power to create it...start within!
