5 Tips to Help You Lose Weight and Have Lower Blood Sugar Levels!

Expert Author Beverleigh H Piepers

It is possible to reverse Type 2 diabetes... to lower blood sugar levels, medication doses, and the risk of complications. Changing to a healthier diet will have a powerful influence on the workings of your cells. You don't need to lose great amounts of weight to start to turn your Type 2 diabetes around and have lower blood sugar levels.

Here are five tips to help you on your way:

Tip 1. Start with a weight loss of between 5 and 10lbs (2.25 to 4.5kg). Once you lose the first 10 pounds (4.5kg), set another goal and continue losing until you reach 10 percent of your initial body weight. You can bring this about by reducing your calorie/kilojoule intake... this means you won't need to give away any of the foods you love, just reduce the quantity gradually. By losing weight you will naturally reduce your blood sugar levels.

Tip 2. Watch the fluids you drink. Fruit juices are the liquid form of fruit without the benefit of fiber which slows down the absorption of sugar to your blood stream. And one glass of orange juice for example, is equal to 3 or 4 oranges. Fresh fruit has fiber which helps you feel full and is more slowly digested and absorbed.

Soda contains high fructose corn syrup which does not help with weight loss. Most people can consume caffeinated beverages in moderation without harm and don't forget good old water (plain or with a wedge of lemon or lime) and its calorie free. Unsweetened tea is another good choice.

Tip 3. Begin your day with breakfast. Skipping breakfast sets you up to feel hungry and then overeat at lunch... the result is more negative than positive. Instead of skipping breakfast, choose a breakfast featuring fiber-rich foods, lean proteins and limited calories (kilojoules).

Tip 4. Go for whole grains. If you eat whole grains instead of refined versions you will have less insulin resistance and be thinner. Why? Because whole grains, just like brown rice, oatmeal and whole wheat, provide far more fiber and nutrients than their refined counterparts. The fiber in whole grains also gives you a full feeling that sustains you between meals. You will also find you will have lower blood sugar levels and improved cholesterol levels.

Tip 5. Slow Down. It takes about twenty minutes for your stomach to signal your brain that you are full. So if you have been eating at a fast and furious rate, you will quickly become 'overstuffed'. It will take a little bit of work to change the actual way you eat but it is really effective. Chew your food thoroughly, put your fork down between bites, and eat at half your usual rate.

You will find you lose weight, lower your blood sugar levels and be on your way to reversing Type 2 diabetes.
