When you decided to join your MLM you saw an amazing future. You saw all your dreams coming true and it seemed like there was no way you could lose. Three weeks into owning your own business, reality sets in... not everybody can see your vision. In fact most people think you are a bit crazy! Why do people say NO to joining your business?
Stigma: So many people have been told that MLM's are pyramid schemes. They have heard these words so many times that they don't even stop to think about what they mean. A pyramid scheme is where the people on the top make all the money and everyone underneath makes less and less. Hmmmm, sounds like a corporation to me. See no one has a problem with a the idea of a pyramid scheme, just the word. So if someone has a negative feeling about MLM's in general I say move on. You can show them through your success that they are misinformed, but trying to convince them that they are wrong will only make them push back harder. Sorry, you are going to have to let this fish go.
Personal History: For the rest of the people who see the true power in direct sales and multi-level marketing, this next issue is a biggie. Most people were recruited into their first MLM by their best friend, cousin or someone else they know. Most likely, their upline was not experienced enough to really teach successful prospecting and marketing techniques. Of course they don't want to face that sure defeat again! You have got to beat them to the punch. Make sure you share with them your plan for their success before they mention that they tried '"this stuff before and it didn't work". There is so much new information out there about how to attract people to your business opposed to chasing people. Educate yourself. I recommend using a proven system that thousands of other people have used to find success. Look around there are some good ones out there.
Money: For the average employee, a couple hundred bucks is a real investment. People with employee mindsets think in terms of bills instead of investments. For instance, a $500 buy-in to a company sounds like a lot when you are thinking of it as an expense, but $500 for the opportunity to make hundreds, thousands and even millions of dollars doesn't sound that bad at all. When you speak to your prospect, make sure that you paint a picture for them. Show them how powerful owning their own business can be. The secret to showing them this power is by telling a story of a successful leader in the industry. If they are too scared to spend the money for the dream, they are not the sort of person you want on your team. You want people who will go the distance.
They Don't Like/Trust You: Now don't take this personally. This doesn't mean that you aren't a great, fun, nice person. It just means that there is something that you are projecting that says "It might not be safe to do business with this guy." The good news is this is something you can fix. It's a strange phenomenon but every little thought that goes on in your head can be felt by your prospect. For instance, if you are looking at your prospect and thinking "Oh, this lady is so nice and she has kids. I feel bad taking her money, because I know she won't be successful and those poor kids..." Guess what? She doesn't quite know why, but she doesn't feel like she will be successful with you either. And surprise, she won't join with you. You should be in a company that you totally believe in. You should look for people's strengths. Tell them about their strengths. If you don't believe they can be successful with you, they won't even give it a shot..... with you.
Your Company or Product: Make sure that you believe in the quality and value of your product whole heartedly. It takes more than just people skills to keep a company alive. Recruiting is a big part of an MLM, but if the product doesn't have great value, the company will not last. As mentioned above, if you don't believe in your product, no one else will either.
Most importantly you need to show your prospect how easy the recruiting and selling process are. You do this by using the process yourself. As you get more efficient in your recruiting steps, you will recruit more and more people. This takes some time, but at least you understand what you are working towards. Use tools to automate presentations and sales funnels to qualify and educate your prospect. Offer these tools to your prospects and take the burden of presentations and marketing off them. Then they are set with only one task and that is to get the word out.
