Utilise these 5 thought-provoking tips for career change from a specialist career coach.
1.You are not your job
When we meet new people, one of the first things we ask or are asked is 'what do you do?' We judge and are judged by our occupations. Our jobs categorise us. In a nanosecond others take the information we give and assess our class, income and status based on the words that we utter.
But you are not your job! It's easy for our identities and sense of who we are to become synonymous with what we do to earn a living.
Remember the formula if your personality, skills, experience and qualifications and also the unexpected twists and turns of life that have brought you to where you are.
Wherever that is it you will always remain you, you have just applied a combination of your skills to pursue a certain type of employment.
2. Now start thinking about what you do, not the type of job you do it in...
- Communicate well?
- Good with numbers?
- Able to persuade or negotiate?
- Great with people?
What does this tell you? Well, once you 'divorce' the job title from the skills you use to actually do the job, suddenly there are many options rather than just a few...
3. Reflect, ask and then listen
Now, you should be on a mission - one of reflection, investigation and self-discovery...
Ask as many people as you can several questions to help you find the answers to the following:
- What are your best qualities?
- What are you talents?
- What abilities come to you naturally and without effort?
4. What makes you happy?
- What is important to you?
- What do you find meaningful and fulfilling?
- What positions will allow you to live, work and interact according to your values?
Following some detailed thought and analysis covering steps 1-4 in depth should bring you to accurate, realistic and exciting ideas for career change. Each area will require some further development, but you should have your short-list.
