5 Costly Mistakes to Avoid When Finding a Blog Niche

Most people think that finding a blog niche only involves going to the Google Keywords tool and searching for the keywords with high search volume and low level of competition. If you are looking for a blog niche this way, then you are missing the bigger picture and you could be committing costly mistakes. Let me explain...

Finding a blog niche requires more than mere keyword research. A common mistake internet marketers make in finding a good niche is they depend too much on search volume and competition scores as if it was the holy grail of niche research. They overlook other major components and later they wonder why their niche blog is not getting traffic or is not converting site visitors into subscribers or buyer

Don't fall into the trap. Here are five costly mistakes to avoid when finding a blog niche.

  1. Not looking at buyers intent. There are some niches where traffic comes mostly from freebie seekers. If you are creating a blog and hoping to make money from affiliate commissions, products sales and ad clicks, then you might need to focus on a niche where there are lot of people ready to buy.
  2. Not drilling down into the micro niche level. I've made this mistake in the past by creating a blog on dog training. It turned out that dog training is a very broad topic even if it's considered a niche by itself. Upon careful analysis, I realized that this niche can be broken down into dog-breed specific micro niches where there is more targeted traffic.
  3. Not looking at competition. Jumping into a niche without care for competition can be costly when you later realize that you've jumped into water full of sharks (big gun competitors) or you've jumped into water without any fish (customers). The essence of a niche is carving out a smaller yet profitable segment of the market.
  4. Not looking at the market. Certainly, keywords alone do not matter. You have to know if there are enough products and services in that niche which you can sell or promote, and if there is good demand for the these products and services.
  5. Money over passion. Sometimes it's easy to be carried away by the prospects of making money from a niche but forgetting the most important part of blogging which is passion. Having a passion in a niche or having the interest to study or master the niche is what will drive you to keep your blog interesting to readers. Without passion, your blog die a natural death and will later join the ranks of abandoned blogs.

Finding a good niche can be a time-consuming process and mistakes are bound to happen. But there are already hot niches waiting for you to tap into, and can be good starting points for anybody having difficulty finding a blog niche.
