5 Common Mistakes Beginners Make When Caring For Orchids

Growing and caring for orchids can be a wonderful experience as well as giving you the ability to enjoy these beautiful flowers in your own home or yard.

However, as with every new venture beginners are prone to make certain mistakes and avoiding some of the more common mistakes will help you take better care of your orchids.

Here are 5 common mistakes beginners make when caring for orchids.

1.Thinking Of Orchids As Delicate Plants.

That's right most people have it in their heads that orchids are extremely delicate plants needing constant attention in order to survive.

This leads them to often over care for their orchids killing them with mistaken kindness so to speak. The truth is that orchids grow in the wild all over the world including parts of the United States and Canada.

Although their blooms may look delicate the plants themselves have to be pretty hardy to thrive in all different environmental conditions.

2.Choosing The Wrong Orchid For Their Individual Gardening Style.

Different people have different gardening styles. Some people are nurturers babying their garden constantly. Others are neglectors, tending to forget about their plants from time to time.

The key to caring for orchids is choosing the right orchid for your individual gardening style. If you are a nurturer who feels they are neglecting their plants unless you water them often then a dendrobium orchid may not be right for you.

On the other hand if you tend to only check on your plants well being once or twice a week then Phalaenopsis may not be the orchid for you.

Choosing the right type of orchid for your gardening style will give you a much better chance at success.

3.Choosing The Wrong Orchid For Your Gardening Environment.

Like gardening style choosing the right orchid for your gardening environment is essential for beginners in caring for their orchids.

If you live in a drafty old house that is impossible to maintain temperatures over 75 degrees F in the winter then choosing an orchid that needs almost constant temperatures of 80 to 85 degrees F simply doesn't make sense.

Therefore, it is important to choose an orchid that can thrive well in the type of growing environment you can offer.

4.Choosing Too Many Different Kinds Of Orchids To Start.

Orchids are like all other plants. Different types and species of orchids need different care.

When you try to grow too many new types of flowers at one time you simply cannot give them all the right care they need.

Choosing one type of orchid will help you learn all the ins and outs of caring for orchids of that type before learning how to care for a new variety.

5.Assuming All Orchids Need The Same Care.

Many beginners make the mistake of assuming that all orchids need the same care.

This is simply not true. Collecting information and advice for the specific type of orchid you have will help you be successful in caring for orchids.

Caring for orchids is not as difficult as some people would have you believe. It just takes a willingness to learn and the right information.
