"Build a website and they will come."
Oh, if only it were that easy. Even in this day and age there is still the belief that as long as you build a website all you need to do is sit back and wait for traffic to roll in.
There are millions of sites on the Internet; as a matter of fact, not too long ago Google indexed their one-trillionth domain name!
That's a lot of competition out there; but you'll find that getting website traffic isn't nearly as difficult as it may seem if you're making use of the right keywords.
The right keywords are important because we want the search engines to understand what each individual web page is about so that they do rank us well and when we rank well, we have a much better chance of getting those all-important site visitors and ultimately, a sale.
One way to structure your site so that it does have a fighting chance is to use keywords effectively. In order to get the right kind of traffic coming to your site, you need to use the right words and you need to use those words in a very specific way to get the best advantage.
- Each page on your site should be focused on one keyword or keyword phrase. The search engines will display each page on your site differently based upon the keywords it believes fits best with what the web searcher entered.
- These words should be in your Title tag, within a header on your page, and mixed a couple of times throughout the content. You want to stay away from using the same keyword over and over again within your web pages; this could be considered keyword stuffing and the search engines frown upon this practice.
- Every page on your site should have unique content. Oftentimes it's easy to take information from another website and use it as your own but this is without a doubt, stealing. If the search engines find that your site contains the same exact information as another site does, it will discount the importance of your own web page because typically, the search engines will have already located the original content first. So be sure you're writing unique content for your own site.
- Use related keywords. Using words that are similar to but not identical to the keywords you want to rank well for is yet another way to get the search engines to understand what your web page is all about. Remember, search engines are just computer programs. Each web page online is not reviewed individually by a real person before it is added to the search engines index. Therefore, you must give the computer program what it wants and what it wants is good content written in such a way that it knows exactly what that web page is about.
In order to gain high visibility in the search engines one of the best tactics you can use is to make use of those keywords that have the most promise for you and your site. Additionally, you'll want to place those keywords as well as related words and phrases throughout the content of your site.
This way you are giving the search engines what they want; knowledge about your web page's topic and you're doing so in such a way that it can help give you a little boost in where your site ends up ranking.
