4 Tips For Writing an eBook With an Appropriate Length

Expert Author Glen Ford

Finding the appropriate length for your eBook can be difficult.

Here are 4 tips for determining the appropriate length.

1. Keep eBooks Shorter Than Print Books

A screen is much more difficult to read when compared to print and paper. Because of this you should always try to keep it small. It shouldn't be the same size as a normal book. Generally you shouldn't go over 60 pages, as anything more is too difficult to read. If you have more than 60 pages and you're still not finished you should write another Ebook.

2. Your Competition Determines The Best Length.

Look at what your competition is doing. If several eBooks are doing quite well and there is a similarity between them, it means whatever they are doing is working. If other eBooks are doing poorly but the content is fairly good, it means that they are doing something wrong. Learn from your competitions' successes and failures. Look at how big or how small they are, and you'll discover how much people are willing to read. You have to be careful about the age of the eBook, however. In this age of the internet, things move quickly, and so an eBook written five years ago will be out of date already.

3. Print Books Are Becoming Your Biggest Competition

Print books are easily accessible, so check printed books for your topic. Look at what the best sellers are doing, and then look at those in the bargain bin. While not all rules for print apply to eBooks, there are many tricks that you can take from the paper and ink books to make your virtual books much better. Remember however, that print is much easier to read. Print books tend to be longer than what your eBook should be. Having said that print books are now being converted to eBooks. One of the effects of this market shift is the increase in the size of eBooks.

4. Your Writing System Should Help You Estimate Your Book's Length.

Once you've estimated how many words you want your eBook to be, you still need to write a book of that length. Your writing system should help you accomplish this. It should provide a method of estimating how many words your book design will be. For example, I typically estimate that a single point on our structured cognitive tool will be explained in approximately 100 words. Therefore I know that in order to create a 100 page book or eBook, I will need roughly 250 points on my content map.
