3 Ways to Raise a Bilingual Baby With a Minimal Amount of Effort

Expert Author Melanie R Thomas

More and more new parents are realising the importance of having a bilingual baby. If you've ever been doubtful about the process of introducing a second language into your child's life don't despair - there are three very easy ways to introduce a second language into your home.

Expose your child to the language

Exposing your child to a second language is one of the simplest ways of raising bilingual kids. Generally, there are three ways to accomplish this. You can learn the language yourself and speak both English and the second language to them. You can introduce them to other bilingual kids and ask them only to speak their second language. This way they can interact with children of their own age. Let them watch movies and cartoons in the second language instead of watching them in English. If you want, put subtitles in English to further help them and develop reading and comprehension.

Use appropriate Training Programs

Find a reputable, affordable training program that will help you develop a bilingual baby. Using a bilingual baby language DVD will make your life incredibly simpler. Also try to find a language DVD that caters for younger children between the age of one and five. If you don't know how to speak the second language, follow the course with your child. You can find many bilingual baby language videos online at a very affordable price. It's also great because you can reuse them with all of your children.

Let them learn the culture

We learn languages quicker when we understand the culture behind them. If you're teaching your child French, cook a French meal every week. Spend a bit of time going through French History with them when they are older. Constantly expose them to the culture behind the language. Make it a fun game that they can take part in. Remember; always keep the information short and interesting. As your children grow older you can introduce more serious facets of French culture into their life.

If you speak the language to your child you could take them to the theater and movies in that language, introduce them to other second language speakers. You might even find that teaching your child a second language is easier than you previously thought. Combined with fun exercises about the culture and appropriate training programs your child will be speaking a second language in no time.
