3 Ways to Know You Are a Follow Up Procrastinator

Expert Author J. H. Lee

I think everyone on earth is a procrastinator. That's right, everyone is. The difference between some procrastinators and others, is the things what they procrastinate about.

If a person procrastinates about getting sufficient exercise, they may not feel very energetic and will probably gain a few pounds. If a person procrastinates about filing their taxes, on April 15, they will be frustrated and moving in a fever pitch to be done by the deadline.

If a person procrastinates about getting out and networking for business, they will notice that their contact base is fairly low. If not nonexistent. If a person procrastinates about starting a business that they know they will can, well, they could be working at their 9-5 until retirement.

As I stated above, everyone is a procrastinator but it depends what they are procrastinating about. For example; a person may be very active in getting out and networking for business by meeting a slew of new contacts. However, if they are procrastinating about following up with those contacts, valuable time has been wasted. Potential opportunities have been overlooked. Are you doing this? If so, it can be corrected by reversing the behavior. Here are a few ways to find out;

1. You have a large stash of business cards in which you don't know who most of the people are.

Has this happened to you? If you look at your business cards, do you wonder who most of the people are? There are ways to document each person; by taking notes on their card or in a database but the best way, is to take it a step further and follow up with them. A mini relationship better than no relationship.

2. You have run into the same people several times at different business networking events and still don't know very much about any of them.

Has this happened to you a few times? This is a sign that you are going out and making yourself known and familiar but what of those people who you meet constantly? Could they be hidden doors to your next big career advancement? You may have had their cards for over a year but have never spoken outside of networking events. Time to bridge the gap.

3. When you call new contacts for the first time, they barely remember when you met.

Okay, this is a sign of good effort, but lack of timing. Yes, at least you contacted them but to make a good impression and begin a relationship, typically, you should contact the person in a reasonable period of time when you are still fresh on their mind.
