3 Simple Steps For A Healthy Eating Plan

Expert Author Becki Andrus

Many people know that a healthy eating plan is something that they should follow. Maybe they are overweight, maybe they do not have any energy, maybe they have health issues that they are battling. Regardless of the reasons, it is easy for someone to say that they are going to start eating healthier, but much more difficult to actually follow through. It can seem as though junk food is everywhere and healthy food is hard to find. It can feel as though processed food is cheap and whole foods are more expensive. All of these things can be obstacles for people who want to start on a healthy eating plan. If you want to eat healthier but aren't sure how to overcome these obstacles and get started, here are a few steps that will help you on your way.

First of all, you will want to clean out your cupboards, refrigerator, and freezer. Clear out the processed food, soda, hydrogenated oils, and fatty snacks. While it may be difficult to throw away this much food, remind yourself that you are making a lifestyle change that will help you to be healthier. Many people have different rules for things that they keep versus things that they throw away. One way to decide is to read the label of a package that you are debating. If it contains hydrogenated oils or corn syrup, throw it out. If it contains anything that you cannot pronounce, throw it out. Remember that if you cannot pronounce it, it was probably created in a chemistry lab instead of a garden and it does not belong in your body. If the container in question contains real food or only a few ingredients, such as a can of beans or tomatoes, then it can stay.

Now that your cupboards are empty, you need to make a plan before you head to the grocery store to fill them again. Figure out what you want to eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and at least one snack per day. Come up with a meal plan for at least one week, including some easy meals for nights that you do not feel like cooking. Don't be afraid to repeat things. Maybe it is easiest for you to have some sort of salad every day for lunch. So long as you include some variety this is perfectly fine. Read the grocery store advertisements and try to plan your meals around produce that is in season and on sale.

Lastly, go grocery shopping. Do this with an exact list of foods based on your meal plan for the week. Shop around the outside edges of the store, avoiding the inner aisles full of processed food. If you know that there is a particular food that is a weakness of yours, be sure to stay away from that aisle. By making a meal plan and winning the battle at the grocery store you can make it easier to stick to your healthy eating plan so that it becomes a habit rather than a challenge.
