Choosing the style of bedroom to fit your personal style can be challenging unless you are looking in the right place. Buying the entire set from the same place can alleviate headaches of trying to make pieces fit together in your scheme. The first step to designing the dream bedroom is to start with basic measurements of your room. You want to make sure you have enough furniture to keep your clothes, but not too much, as to add clutter and make it difficult to walk, especially in the dark.

Traditional Bedroom Furniture

A traditional bedroom typically has that old world feel to it. The bed may have a canopy top, or a sleigh style bed with many spokes at the foot of the bed. The bed can be a standard 4 post bed, or even a kingly panel bed. The furniture can be antique or reproductions of antique pieces. Most of the wood is dark, rich and luxurious. Accent this style room with rich thick fabrics, quilts and rugs. Lighting is typically darker. Traditional rooms often have thick draperies with designs and wall paper that has texture and design to it. Don't think this is your grandmother's bedroom, because it is very stately and you could easily find this in 5 star resorts like the Ritz-Carlton Hotels or the White House. It is certainly the style you would find in a Versailles Palace or a French Villa. Fabrics and wall coverings can be complex designs. Think of the fleur de lis and similar crest style designs with floral patterns. You could easily see similar designs throughout the room and mixed together in a complex layering.

Transitional Bedroom Furniture

The transitional bedroom often has a mix of the old and of the new. You often see a combination of the dark woods and solid colors for bedding and wall covering. Although you may see draperies and wall paper, it is typically a more solid color. You may have rich greens or browns on the walls complemented by white drapery and beige sheets. Rugs are common but they would be a complimentary piece to the whole room and typically matching the same themed colors. Thick bedding and a multitude of pillows are also found here, but you would have less flowery patterns. You may have one blanket or quilt or a couple pillows with a complex design, but you definitely wouldn't have several layers of complexity as you would in a traditional setting. It has the air of the romantic and yet the simplicity of the modern.

Contemporary/Modern Bedroom Furniture

Contemporary styles are practical. You could see drawers under the beds to hide away pillows or bedding that isn't used. Platform beds are common, allowing you to easily change sheets without having to dismantle the entire bedroom first. Rooms are painted a solid color, and this may be red, beige, green, blue or brown. Beige is a common color in nearly every design for rugs, sheets, pillows or comforters. A light wood flooring is common. Although modern rooms can have light wood, dark woods can also be contemporary especially when the designs are simple, often box-like or have modern conveniences like storage underneath or platform appeal.

Modern designs are commonly associated with masculine bachelor pad designs. But this isn't true anymore. Modern furniture looks great in lofts, and in places that are chic, hip or in high-fashion districts. It is young and exudes high energy.
