Masai Mara game reserve is the best natural destination in Africa for viewing wildlife in big numbers. Each year, vast numbers of wildebeest and zebra migrate from the Serengeti in Tanzania in search of rush green grass that grow during the months of April to May on the Kenya side. Once the herds eat all the grass on the Kenya side, they return back to the Ngorongoro plains and the Serengeti where they give birth and suckle their young ones. Once the young ones are fully grown, they return back to the Mara with their mothers unaware of the dangers that lurk behind. The migration is a natural phenomena that is highly dependent on the environmental changes on the beautiful Savannah grasslands.
The outstanding grasslands, abundant wildlife and spectacular views of the Masai Mara game reserve are a sight to behold. It is considered to be the finest game reserve in Africa. A Masai Mara Safari usually starts in Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya. One may decide to travel by air or by road. Using a flight will take you approximately 45 minutes, while travelling by custom-made tour van will take at least 6 hours. Many people prefer to time their visit to the Mara with the annual wildebeest migration during the months of May to June and July, August and September.
Day 1). Depart Nairobi at 09:30am. Travel through the scenic Great Rift Valley, home to dozens of active and inactive volcanic mountains, impressive landscapes and hot springs. Pass through the wheat farms of Narok to reach Narok town at noon, and the Mara late in the afternoon in time for an evening game drive. Dinner will have been organized at one of the world-class camping sites available in the Mara. Entertainment, dance and music from the local Masai community will be a welcome activity at this time of the hour before resting for the day.
Day 2). After breakfast proceed to a pre-arranged game drive, one in the morning just before breakfast and another late in the afternoon. Spend your time exploring the beautiful scenery and the rich variety of flora and fauna that populates the reserve. Visit the Mara River and see for yourself the spot where the wildebeest cross the river during migration. You will count yourself as one of the lucky people if your visit coincides with the actual migration. Some of the animals that you will definitely see include the big five ( elephant, buffalo, rhino, lion and the leopard), among others mammals, reptiles and birds.
Day 3). This is the day you will leave The Masai Mara Game Reserve. One thing that you might not want to miss though, is a Masai Mara Balloon Safari. It is a thrilling experience; you see millions of wildebeest, zebra, Buffalo, warthog and many more mammals feeding on the rash green grounds. After breakfast, you will travel to the north on your way to Narok and finally to Nairobi. You will have an opportunity to see the breathtaking and panoramic views of the Game Reserve.
