When my husband and I first started trying to conceive, we were totally clueless! We actually thought that as soon as I stopped taking the Pill, it would only take a month or two and bingo, pregnant! But, it didn't happen that way, so we got educated. When I think about how little I knew about my own body, it astounds me. So, if nothing else this journey has been an education, and I know we'll be successful soon. In the meantime, I thought I would share some of the misconceptions I had and the facts that I found out. Please keep in mind that I am not a healthcare professional, just someone going through the crazy journey called TTC (Trying to Conceive).
Misconception Number 1:
Getting pregnant will be the easiest thing we'll ever do.
Ha! It's frustrating because we see so many people who weren't even trying to get pregnant, and maybe didn't even want to get pregnant, but Oops! there it is, they get pregnant. And then, here I am trying really hard, and it hasn't happened yet. But I have learned that that is just the way it is for some people. It just takes longer for some people, than for others. It's o.k. though because this is something that is definitely worth the wait.
Misconception Number 2:
The first day of a menstrual cycle is when there is any blood, including spotting.
Nope, the first day is actually the first day of the flow of blood, which is characterized by the bright red blood. So, that dark brown spotting doesn't count. I just learned this one recently. I had no idea! I've been counting that as the first day for the last six months. Another thing I learned is that keeping close track of my menstrual cycle is really important. Timing is everything!!
Misconception Number 3:
Worrying and stressing out about conceiving lowers your chance of conceiving.
O.k. so this is one my husband would tell me every now and then. And you know what it did? Made me worry and stress that I was worrying and stressing too much. Then I read that while stress is obviously not good for us in general, there is absolutely no scientific evidence that worrying about conceiving lessens chances of conceiving. No scientific proof! So, stop worrying and stressing about it already!
So that's it. I hope this helped you to feel a little bit better about your TTC journey.
