Forget about just getting discovered by a major record label and getting signed, you want to first learn how to increase your fan base because your fans are the ones who will help you get discovered. You might be better than Justin Bieber, Eminem, Drake, Mariah Carey, Lil Wayne, etc but if you don't know how to market yourself then your music will never be heard. Think of yourself as a business, you are the product and your fans are the customers.
1. Online Marketing
-YouTube- If you are a singer, make videos of cover songs and only put up videos of songs you sound good singing in. Don't just put up songs you think you can sing. Remember thousands of people and eventually millions of people will be seeing your videos so first impression is everything. If you are a rapper, you should post up original songs with a video that goes along with it. If you don't have original beats, you can always search the Internet for producers that make beats that fit your style. You can also find producers on the Internet if you're a singer and want to write an original song.
*IMPORTANT*
- Make sure you show personality and confidence in your videos
-Always tell people to subscribe to your videos.
-Tell people to click the " Like" button if they like your video
-Tell people to spread the word about you if they like your video
-Don't only post videos of you singing or rapping, but post up video blogs, stuff that you're doing besides music. You want fans to get to know you on a personal level.
2. PERFORMANCES-If you want to become a famous musician, you need to learn how to perform and get the crowd hyped. So you should study your favorite musician and watch how they perform. You need to have stage presence. I know Justin Bieber is not the best singer but the reason why Usher signed him was because he saw he had stage presence. Even Soulja Boy, he isn't the best rapper but he has stage presence.
Where to perform:
-clubs
-colleges campuses
-high schools
-malls
*Since you want to do mainstream music, your fan base will most likely be people from 15-25 year olds. Find where your niche is and perform there.
3- Email/Facebook/MySpace - You need to have a place where fans can still keep in contact once they become a fan.
- Have your own mailing list to keep in touch with fans through email
- As much as possible always reply back to your fans through Facebook, MySpace, and twitter.
- Keep your fans updated with new music, up and coming shows, and album releases, you should always keep your fans thinking of you.
