3 Basketball Dribbling Tips For Better Dribbling

Here are some basketball dribbling tips for players of any age and skill level. Dribbling is a simple skill to master. With practice anyone can become a good ball handler.

Here I am going to share with you three tips that will help you take your ball handling to the next level.

Setup Your Moves

If the defense can telegraph your moves you'll be a turnover waiting to happen. But if on the other hand, you learn how to setup your moves, you'll break more ankles of defenders than you can imagine.

So how do you setup moves? Well, it's simple. I think the best way to setup your moves is to use your body. Not just the ball. Use your eyes, shoulders, hips and anything you can think of to really sell your moves.

For instance if you are going to crossover on the defense, the most important part of the crossover is the sell. The sell is a shoulder rocking motion that makes your defender think you're going one way and then you crossover and change direction and go the other way.

Once you get your defender leaning then you crossover quick and explode right by. If you can learn how to use your shoulders to set up all of your moves you'll be lethal with the basketball.

This also requires that you're loose and flexible. You'll want to be elusive if you want to make yourself really tough to guard.

Peripheral Vision

If you are dribbling against a defender and you happen to be protecting the ball. And maybe you have your body in between your man and the ball. As far as you can see, looking over your shoulder there may be an opening.

Well it is usually the players who almost seem like they have eyes behind their heads who can make things happen in a split second. Well for the most part, if you really work on improving your peripheral vision you can create situations like this for yourself.

One simple drill you can do to improve this is with a tennis ball or basketball. Simply stretch your arms out in front of you in an underhanded fashion with the ball. You'll want your arm to be parallel to the floor.

Then just roll the ball off your fingertips a couple of inches and catch it. And as you do this, slowly move your arm from out in front of you as far right as you can see it without turning your head. Look straight ahead the entire time. Repeat this drill on the left side also.

Before long you'll notice your peripheral vision getting better and better.

Keep The Ball In Front Of You

This is an easy one skill to improve on. If you aren't used to doing this it may feel uncomfortable at first. But whenever you are dribbling in transition, on the break, keep the ball out in front of you.

If you have it on your side, the defense can easily pluck it out ahead to another defender and steal it.

A simple drill for this is to work on dribbling up and down the court with someone running behind you. Have a partner work on trying to hit the ball from behind while you dribble in transition. As you also improve your peripheral vision, notice how you see that player more easily too.
