3 Basketball Dribbling Fundamentals Every Player Must Know

In the game of basketball, not knowing the fundamentals can hurt you. And when it comes to dribbling, bad habits can really slow your game down.

But not to worry. Here are the top 3 fundamentals that you should know when dribbling the basketball. Perfecting these fundamentals will no only make you a better ball handler. But they'll help you to go anywhere you want on the court with ease.

Fundamental #1

If you stand straight up in the game of basketball you're very easy to guard. So the first fundamental is get down on the ball. Get low. The lower you can get comfortably the more effective you'll be with the basketball. So many players have trouble getting down on the ball.

If you are one of those players you have to really work on your flexibility. A high dribble is a treat for the defense. Your goal should be to be as loose as a cat with the ball. So work on your hamstrings and back and arms when stretching.

I also recommend that all players take Yoga. I know I may be losing you here but bare with me. You see, the game of basketball is about quick movements and flexibility certainly increases your quickness.

So go out and grab a book on yoga or join a class. Another side benefit of being flexible is that it not only makes it easier to get down on the ball but it will help to prevent injuries.

Fundamental #2

Protect the ball. I'm sure you've heard this over and over. But the truth is, players get away from the fundamentals and it shows. Think of your off hand and the basketball as connected on a string. So as you dribble always have it out there.

If at all possible, try to put your body in between the ball and the defense at all times. Remember Magic Johnson at 6' 9" handling the ball. He rarely ever had the ball stolen from him. Most of us aren't as tall as Magic at 6' 9". So with a little bit of work in this area you'll be hard to guard.

Fundamental #3

This is probably one of the most misunderstood fundamentals of them all. But you must dribble with a purpose.
I think so many players get tripped up on this one and have no purpose when dribbling because they don't have their head up for one. And two, they have a very low basketball IQ.

Now basketball IQ can be increased with experience and through playing more. In your free time it is important to completely immerse yourself in the game to increase your basketball IQ.

So many players get the ball and immediately dribble it just to be dribbling. The fastest way to get the ball up the court is to pass it. And far too many times players blow scoring or passing opportunities because they don't use their dribble effectively.

So two ways to improve in this area are one, always keep your head up and survey the floor. Two, increase your basketball IQ and understanding of the game. Learn how to make things happen by studying players on the collegiate and pro level. And of course, play as much as you can.
