Here are some proven tips to help you write an effective sales letter:
- Focus on the benefits your prospect will get from your product or service. It is a proven fact that people will invest more in a cure than a prevention so state how your product or service will help your prospect overcome a problem they currently have.
- You can't be everything for everybody so don't try to write for everyone. Write for your target audience as that is who will purchase your product or service.
- Use simple, easy-to-understand words unless your sales letter needs to use technical jargon in order to get your message across to a specifically targeted group of prospects.
- Write short and simple sentences using short words.
- Break the text into short paragraphs. Long paragraphs are hard to read on-line so keep your paragraphs short with white space between each paragraph.
- Write as if you are talking to your prospect directly.
- Always include enough information so that your prospect can make an educated decision to purchase your product or service. If you have not included enough information in your sales letter, your prospect will be unlikely to purchase your product or service.
- State a point as briefly as possible. If you can state your point in two sentences, don't use ten.
- Use specifics to come to the point. If you don't clearly state your point, your prospect may not understand or may misinterpret what you are saying.
- Write your copy in present tense, second person.
- Focus on your prospect, not on yourself. Your prospect cares about how your product or service will help them so that's where you should focus your efforts.
- Many people will not read your sales letter word for word. By using bulleted lists, headings, and subheadings, your copy will be easy for these prospects to scan.
- Always state your most important points in your headings, subheadings, and bulleted lists. If someone just scans your copy, you will still be able to get your sales message across to them.
- Repeat your best benefits or most important points at least 3 times.
- Use action words.
- Write more copy than you need then edit it down.
- Use testimonials to build trust.
- Make it easy for your prospect to do what you want them to do. For example, if your objective is to get more subscribers to your newsletter, add a prominent subscription form, don't place the form in a hard to find spot. If you want your prospect to purchase your product, use a prominent payment button and surround it with white space so that it is readily apparent.
- Since some people will skip reading your sales letter completely and go directly to the P.S., always repeat your most important points in your PS and PPS.
- Always use A/B split testing to test different versions of your sales letter. This should be something that you continuously do so as soon as you finish testing one component of your sales letter, test something else.
