How we communicate with people is very important. If we want to get certain things done we have to rely on the help of others to help us achieve that. Our communication style will determine how successfully we leverage the time and experience of other people to achieve our goals without the use of hostile, aggressive or manipulative tactics.
As we communicate with people on a daily basis whether, it is at home, work, face to face or over the phone, we need to do it effectively. That is why it is important to communicate assertively.
Here are a few tips to help you communicate more assertively:
Tip 1
How you use your body is as just as essential as how you speak therefore, your body language is very important. When you are communicating with a person make sure that you make eye contact with them. Do not stare too intently as this may make the other person feel uncomfortable. Keep your body relaxed and stand in an open and non aggressive manner. Avoid folding your arms as this is a defensive mechanism.
Tip 2
If you are meeting someone whether it is your boss or your doctor then you need to be clear in your head about what you want to say. For example, it you are looking for a wage rise then, prepare yourself in advance rather than walking into your bosses office on a wing and a prayer. Beforehand, identify what your needs and feelings are. What are the key reasons that you want a raise and show evidence about what you say is true. By being better prepared you will be able to express yourself more clearly and be more specific in your request. By being more specific the other person will have a better understanding of your request and the reasons why. It is important that you avoid vague requests as these can be misunderstood by the other person.
