Avoid folding your arms as this is a defensive mechanism.

If you are meeting someone whether it is your boss or your doctor then you need to be clear in your head about what you want to say. For example, it you are looking for a wage rise then, prepare yourself in advance rather than walking into your bosses office on a wing and a prayer. Beforehand, identify what your needs and feelings are. What are the key reasons that you want a raise and show evidence about what you say is true. By being better prepared you will be able to express yourself more clearly and be more specific in your request. By being more specific the other person will have a better understanding of your request and the reasons why. It is important that you avoid vague requests as these can be misunderstood by the other person.
