There are several techniques to effectively handle the basketball and own the court off the dribble. I'm going to discuss 2 of which I think are some of the best techniques for getting anywhere you want to go.
The key with these techniques is that they both have their place. And the good thing is once you master them you can apply them in various game situations. Also, you'll want to practice these against defense as well to help you improve at them. You can practice them in half court games or pick-up games. Then when it is game time you'll be ready.
So here are 2 dribbling techniques that will without doubt help you dominate with the ball. One deals with mindset and the other an actual move/technique for keeping the defense guessing.
Technique 1: Use your dribble to attack the defense
Always think attack. So many times players aren't offensive minded with the basketball. Remember the point is to score.
It never fails, especially with younger players, where they'll get the ball and play "keep away." When I say keep away, I mean they'll dribble away from the basket and not even look at the basket. Their whole thought process is centered around not letting the defense steal the ball from them. Instead I recommend you adopt a more assertive attitude.
Always think of yourself as a scoring threat when you have the ball in your hands. And having the ball in your hands is like being in the driver's seat for you. The defense is always at a disadvantage. So you must think this way and remember that the object is to score. Not play keep away.
So the first key technique deals with mindset. See yourself as a scoring threat when you have the ball.
Technique 2: Master the reverse dribble and rocket step
The reverse dribble and rocket step moves are moves that you'll want to master. The reverse dribble is a great technique for avoiding double teams, resetting the offense or assessing the defense.
All you do when doing the reverse dribble is back up with your dribble. Usually backing up two dribbles is good enough for you to see what the defense has cooking. Then from there the defense has one of two things that they can do. They can stay where they are or they can move towards you as you reverse your dribble. That sets up the next technique.
The next technique is the rocket step move. As the defense comes at you and as you reverse your dribble, next you'll want to make a quick move and change direction and explode by them.
So the move will look like this. You reverse your dribble two dribbles, the defense comes at you. Then you make an in-and-out move followed by a quick crossover.
When done correctly, the rocket step move works great when the defense comes towards you when after you reverse your dribble.
Another great use for the rocket step move is when the defense tries to trap you. That's the perfect time to reverse your dribble. Then do the move on one of the defenders and blow by them.
