11 Common and Deadly Mistakes When You Rent a Generator

Expert Author G. D. Foster

If you buy or rent a generator, there are several mistakes that should be avoided because the results could be deadly. For new owners or renters, it is imperative to read the instructions before handling the machine and heed the following tips...

  • Never put a generator in your house, garage or any other unventilated shed. Carbon monoxide, a lethal gas, is a byproduct of the emissions. It is colorless and odorless; people often die in their sleep from the fumes. For the same reason, do not put the generator near a window. Keep it far from the house.
  • Never put rags, gas containers or any combustible items next to the generator. The machine should be debris-free.
  • Never plug a portable generator directly into the home wiring; this action is called back-feeding. The electrical power from the generator could kill an unsuspecting utility worker who thinks he is working on a dead line. The generator could also damage the wiring of the house. Use heavy duty outdoor extension cords to plug it directly into appliances.
  • Never use damaged, two-pronged, or flimsy extension cords.
  • Never overload it with more wattage than what it is rated to take.
  • Never get it wet. A well-ventilated enclosure or canopy is needed during storms.
  • Never refuel before turning it off and letting it cool down first.
  • Never try to put out a fire with water. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby.
  • Never allow children to play in the vicinity.
  • Never power down the generator before turning off all the appliances that it is supporting first.
  • Never wear loose, hanging clothes or jewelry when operating the generator.
