10 Reasons Why People Don't Succeed at Clearing the Clutter and Getting Organized
Print This Article Ezine Publisher Send To Friends Add To Favorites Post A Comment Suggest Topic Report Author

1.  Not allow enough time.  People often think they can do the job in a short time and don't allow enough time.

2.  Not have the supplies to do the job.  Often people don't have boxes or bags on hand for sorting.  Usually you want to sort into piles To Keep, To Toss, To Move Elsewhere, To Give Away, and the Maybe Pile.

3.  Not prepared to make key decisions.  This can be a number of things:  the decision makers are not present, you're not in the mood to make the tough decisions or you haven't identified the big goal that will make it happen.

4.  Not enough helping hands.  You get started and then need help putting up a hook or a shelf or someone to help remove the bags of trash or just someone there to keep you going.

5.  Not enough psychic energy.  Having the mental energy to do the job is often more important than having the physical energy.  See # 3 and # 4 above.

6.  Not have a clear goal or plan.  This is really important, because it helps to see the goal of doing the whole project, but also seeing it can be done in parts.  For example, when creating a plan to tackle the garage or the basement, it can help to break it down into smaller parts like all sports equipment, tools or craft projects.  This will help you to plan breaks or divide the task over a couple days. As you plan, you can figure out who needs to be involved in each part.

7.  Afraid of cleared space.  Many take comfort in filling their space with collections and hobbies.  What happens is after a while you don't see them anymore.  When you clear out and pare down, you can then showcase small collections.  This can bring more enjoyment.  You might even change the displayed items each season.

8.  Too much past or future.  Much of the stuff we hold onto is memories of the past or "someday maybe" for the future.  What you want to do is get a balance between past, present and future so you can enjoy the present and not be weighed down by the past or the future.

9.  Can't get far enough at one time.  When you find you can't complete all you wanted to do in one day, then discouragement sets in.  Sometimes the project is left in the messy stage which compounds the discouragement.  That can trigger a lot of negative self talk.  And then, often the project is abandoned.  See # 6.

10. Overwhelmed.  Many times people dream about getting a space organized but it never happens because the task appears so overwhelming.  Starting somewhere is better than not starting at all.  Pick one small project or category that you can do in the time you have.

As you consider these 10 Reasons, see which ones resonate with you and how you might rev up your organizing to get yourself over the hurdle to successfully complete an organizing project.
