Excellence is a journey, not a destination. Perfection is a destination, and let's face it, it's an impossible one to reach. The sun will not always be shining, the stars will not always be aligned. Don't let that stop you, though! People have a tendency to want to wait until conditions are "perfect": "I'll start that new business when the time is right"," I'll go out and meet that special some one once things move along a little more here"," I can't do that now, the conditions aren't perfect." That's a bunch of nonsense.
Things do not have to be perfect in order to start, try, or do something new. As a matter of fact, they never will be perfect, anyway, so why wait? Perfectionism is a perfect excuse to procrastinate. It ultimately leads to dissatisfaction and depression. A much better route to take is to take the path of excellence. "What is the difference?", you ask? Excellence is where passion and pride meet hard AND smart effort. The vast majority of people take their work and efforts to what we'll call a "B" average. They got the grade, they passed the class, moving on... This is cutting themselves so short! The difference between good and great is usually very little, and an excellent product or result will leave a far better and lasting impression than a shoddy one!
Excellence is something that takes TIME. The key is that it needs to be in concentrated and concise (but frequent) increments. Cleaning house is a great example of this. 15 minutes a day will leave your house far cleaner than letting it all pile up to one day a week, and in the process, you have a beautiful, clean home EVERY day as opposed to just one cleaning day.
Below are ten tips for you to follow to achieve the life you have dreamed of:
1) Go the extra mile. Excellence is achieved right past the point of giving up.
2) Take care. Make everything a masterpiece and take pride in what you do.
3) Plan ahead. Read the manual, follow instructions, and think before acting.
4) Outsource. Know your own abilities and ask for help/hire someone to do something beyond your scope.
5) Adjust. Along the way things will probably deviate from the plan, leave margins for error and adjust things as necessary.
6) Take your time. Life is not a race is a common cliche, but it is true! The people who swerve in and out of traffic risk everyone's lives around them, and 90% of the time they end up right next to you at the next traffic light anyways!
7) Don't cut corners. The temptation to "half-ass" things is many times to try to strong to resist, but try your best to follow through with things to completion.
8) Use the right tools. Not only will you probably finish a project much quicker using the proper tools, but you will also do a much higher quality job. Tools are not an area you should skimp on!
9) Take Notes. Successful people are voracious note takers. Learn from your mistakes.
10) Build to last. Don't do things under the assumption that it won't be your problem, or that it can always be replaced. Building things of high quality will not only usually save you bundles of money in the long run, but the sense of satisfaction from a job well done is literally priceless.
