#1 Secret to Losing Weight

Expert Author Jim Sperlich

The biggest hurdle people face when it comes to weight loss is just figuring out where to start. We all know saying "I'm going to lose weight" and actually doing it are sometimes two completely different things. I'm right!

It does not matter how much you would like lose, whether it is 10 pounds or a hundred pounds, we are going to get you off on the right foot!

Your first step and number one priority is setting your goals. Look at it as mile post markers on the highway. Without these markers, you have no idea as to how long it is going to take to reach your destination. The same applies to your weight loss goal. You have no idea of how much time and effort it will take to reach your goal.

Now, ask yourself these questions.

1. How much weight do I want to lose?

2. At what point in time do you expect to reach your goal?

Immediately, write down these goals. This way you will always have a constant reminder of your goals so they will not be forgotten. Make little notes (multiple copies) and place them all around the house.
Especially, place these reminders in the KITCHEN; refrigerator, cupboards, cabinets, freezer, etc. In these particular areas lives the "temptation demon" which tries to ruin your weight loss efforts. So, we need extra reminders to steer us away.

Now that your goals are set, we need to make them achievable, and REALISTIC.

If you have a goal of dropping 50 pounds within a couple of weeks or a month, sorry, it is not going to happen for you. Setting a goal like this will result in doom, thus nullifying the effectiveness of goal setting.

When an unrealistic goal is set, you set yourself up for failure. You will end up frustrated and disappointed in yours efforts to achieve weight loss.

A good rule of thumb, no matter what you do, would be to figure about 1 to 2 pounds per week. You may get faster results, but this is a good barometer. Weight loss takes time. There is no magic dust to make these changes overnight.

Going back to our example, if you had a goal of losing 50 pounds of extra weight, the realistic time table would be at least five to six months to achieve.

The object is to set small and reachable goals for you. Once you achieved your goal, you will gain confidence, self esteem, and will be proud of what you just accomplished.

Then, once you have gained that sense of accomplishment, you will be able to move forward, possibly setting new goals (if needed) or just maintaining where you stand.
